Santa Ponsa, Mallorca, Spain from Travel with Iva Jasperson

Santa Ponsa, Mallorca, Spain from Travel with Iva Jasperson

Hello everyone...

The town is a popular holiday destination and attracts people from countries with colder climates such as Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland and Great Britain, especially from May to October. Some have bought villas and apartments in the hills on each side of the bay. In recent years, it has become a popular party destination among youths due to its great nightlife.

Santa Ponsa derives its name from a Roman villa called Sancta Pontia. Santa Ponsa is where King James I of Aragon (Jaume in Catalan) landed on September 12, 1229, in his successful quest to conquer the island and take it from the Moors after more than 300 years of Muslim rule. Majorca became part of the Kingdom of Aragon following James's conquest and was later annexed to the Kingdom of Spain. A cross at the entrance to the marina marks the spot where James landed. Every September there is a grand fiesta to commemorate the landing with a mock battle between the Moors and Christians on the beach. It is a two-week fiesta which incorporates a pop concert and firework display.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria, Palma de Mallorca, Mallorca, Spain from Tr...

The Cathedral of Santa Maria, Palma de Mallorca, Mallorca, Spain from Travel with Iva Jasperson

Hello everyone...

Built by the Crown of Aragon on the site of a Moorish-era mosque, the cathedral is 121 metres long, 55 metres wide and its nave is 44 metres tall. By way of comparison, the height of the central nave reaches 33m in Notre Dame de Paris, 38m in Reims, 42m in Notre-Dame d'Amiens and 48m in Saint-Pierre de Beauvais, the highest of all Gothic cathedrals.

Designed in the Catalan Gothic style but with Northern European influences, it was begun by King James I of Aragon in 1229 but only finished in 1601. It sits within the old city of Palma atop the former citadel of the Roman city, between the Royal Palace of La Almudaina and the episcopal palace. It also overlooks the Parc de la Mar and the Mediterranean Sea.

In 1901, fifty years after a restoration of the cathedral had started, Antoni Gaudí was invited to take over the project. While some of his ideas were adopted – moving the choir stalls from the middle nave to be closer to the altar, as well as a large canopy – Gaudí abandoned his work in 1914 after an argument with the contractor. The planned changes were essentially cosmetic rather than structural, and the project was cancelled soon after.

Sea Urchin, Santa Ponsa, Mallorca from Travel with Iva Jasperson

Sea Urchin, Santa Ponsa, Mallorca from Travel with Iva Jasperson

Hello everyone...

Sea urchins or urchins, archaically called sea hedgehogs, are small, spiny, globular animals that, with their close kin, such as sand dollars, constitute the class Echinoidea of the echinoderm phylum. About 950 species of echinoids inhabit all oceans from the intertidal to 5,000 meters (16,000 ft; 2,700 fathoms) deep. The shell, or "test", of sea urchins, is round and spiny, typically from 3 to 10 cm (1.2 to 3.9 in) across. Common colors include black and dull shades of green, olive, brown, purple, blue, and red. Sea urchins move slowly, feeding primarily on algae. Sea otters, starfish, wolf eels, triggerfish, and other predators hunt and feed on sea urchins. The name "urchin" is an old word for hedgehog, which sea urchins resemble.
